The Syrian civil war has caused a shockingly high amount of civilian displacement. By some estimates, half of all Syrians have had to flee their homes, internally or abroad. Today's guest, Dr. Benedetta Berti, has written that this is no accident, but is a result of deliberate tactics by the parties in the conflict. This episode discusses how deliberate displacement affects the conflict, and what it means for the future of Syria.

Dr. Berti is a fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), a TED Fellow, and a lecturer at Tel Aviv University, and the author of "Armed Political Organizations: From Conflict to Integration." For more, watch her TEDTalk on how militias maintain their power and influence.
